One of the hardest things about moving is making sure you choose a neighborhood you’ll actually enjoy living in (makes sense, right?). Actually, choosing the right neighborhood is just as important, or maybe even more important, than choosing the right house.
You want to make sure your new neighborhood fits YOUR specific lifestyle. Do you like going to the bars every other night and stumbling home at 2:00am? You probably shouldn’t live in the suburbs. Just want to spend quiet time at home with your cats while binge-watching Netflix? The LoDo neighborhood probably isn’t your best best.
In other words, don’t make the biggest investment of your life, only to realize later on the neighborhood isn’t right for you. Do your research in advance, and decide on what’s important to you and your lifestyle.
If you were looking for a relationship, would you want to be with any ol’ person regardless of their personality? Probably not. In reality, you’d probably want to date someone who at least comes close to sharing the same values, sense of humor, and lifestyle as you. It’s a commitment, and commitment is a big deal.
Same thing goes with finding the right neighborhood.
Luckily, there are about a million online resources to help you find those neighborhoods. You can also contact me for some guidance on which neighborhoods match the things that are most important to you.
Once you’ve discovered a few neighborhoods and learned more about them, you’ll still want to visit the neighborhood in person of course. Consider finding an Airbnb rental in that neighborhood and staying for a weekend. You’ll be able to walk around, meet some people, check out the local businesses, and get a first-hand sense of life there before investing in your new home.
Phew, that’s a lot of work, right? Maybe. But it’ll save you all kinds of stress and/or buyer’s remorse down the road. Buying a home is one of the biggest and best decisions you can make in your life, so make sure you don’t rush into anything before doing your due diligence.
